Modify Dictation

The following commands modify the just-dictated phrase, applying to both Vocola dictation and WSR dictation. (See Dictation for background.) The "example" column shows how the command would affect the phrase "Best of breed".

"Scratch That"	Delete the just-dictated phrase. With Vocola dictation (but not WSR dictation), subsequent commands will affect the previously-dictated phrase.	""

"Cap That"	Capitalize all words in the phrase.	"Best Of Breed"
"All Caps That"	Convert the phrase to all upper case.	"BEST OF BREED"
"No Caps That"	Convert the phrase to all lower case.	"best of breed"
"Title Case That"	Capitalize all but "small" words in the phrase.	"Best of Breed"
"Compound That"	Remove spaces in the phrase.	"Bestofbreed"
"Hyphenate That"	Replace spaces with hyphens in the phrase.	"Best-of-breed"
"Underscore That"	Replace spaces with "underscore" characters in the phrase.	"Best_of_breed"
"Title That"	Convert the phrase to a single "title case" word.	"BestOfBreed"
"Camel [Case] That"	Convert the phrase to a single "camel case" word (so-called because the resulting shape resembles a camel).	"bestOfBreed"

WSR commands let you refer to document text directly, for example saying "Cap public library" to change an occurrence of "public library" to "Public Library". While Vocola commands can't refer to all text in a document, the following commands let you refer to text in Vocola's active dictation. Active dictation contains all phrases dictated since the last command, possibly separated by pauses. These commands let you make quick modifications to recently-spoken phrases by referring to the words in those phrases.

Note: the 8 commands in this group may not work due to a bug in the Microsoft SAPI.

When you say	The command will
"Cap <activeDictation>" or "Caps <activeDictation>"	Capitalize all words in the specified phrase.
"All Caps <activeDictation>"	Convert the specified phrase to all upper case.
"No Caps <activeDictation>"	Convert the specified phrase to all lower case.
"Compound <activeDictation>"	Remove spaces in the specified phrase.
"Hyphenate <activeDictation>"	Replace spaces with hyphens in the specified phrase.
"Title <activeDictation>"	Convert the specified phrase to a single "title case" word.
"Camel <activeDictation>"	Convert the specified phrase to a single "camel case" word.
"Replace <activeDictation> With <text>"	Convert the specified phrase to the specified replacement text.

Because Vocola has no knowledge of a document's text, a dictated phrase may have an extra initial space or lack a desired initial space. In addition, the capitalization of the initial word may be incorrect. The following commands adjust for these common errors. They work for Vocola dictation but not for WSR dictation.

"Fix Cap"	Case-flip the first letter of the phrase—make it lower case if it was upper case, or upper case if it was lower case.	"best of breed"
"Fix Space"	Add a space before the first word if none was present, or remove a space if one was present.	" Best of breed"
"Fix Both"	Equivalent to "Fix Cap" followed by "Fix Space".	" best of breed"

The following miscellaneous dictation commands are also useful.

When you say	The command will
"Dictation Shortcuts"	Activate the Vocola Dictation Shortcuts panel.
"Phrase Start"	Move the insertion point to the beginning of the just-dictated phrase.
"Try Again"	Replace the just-dictated phrase with the best-guess alternate. Sometimes you just know that the speech engine's first alternate is the right one but you don't want the overhead of raising the correction panel. Successive invocations retrieve successive alternates. Unlike the correction panel, this command does not update the speech model.
"Text Off"	Disables Vocola dictation.
"Text On"	Re-enables Vocola dictation after a previous "Text Off" Command.
